RED Camera Video Files and Codecs
RED Camera Video Files and Codecs
RED cameras are known for their high-resolution sensors and proprietary compression technology. RED records video in a format called REDCODE RAW, which uses .R3D file extensions. Unlike traditional video that records RGB pixels, R3D files store the raw sensor data, including the Bayer pattern, white balance metadata, and adjustable compression settings. This gives filmmakers enormous flexibility in post-production, similar to how raw still photos give photographers more editing room.
The key feature of REDCODE is its wavelet-based compression. Instead of compressing blocks of pixels like traditional codecs, RED uses a wavelet transform that compresses the image in a way that preserves detail better at the same bitrate. You can adjust the compression ratio when recording. Lower compression ratios like 5:1 produce larger files with maximum quality. Higher ratios like 12:1 produce smaller files that are still remarkably good for most purposes.
One of the unique advantages of R3D files is that you can change resolution and compression after recording. An R3D file contains the full sensor data regardless of what resolution you chose to record at. In RED's software, you can debayer the file at different resolutions and adjust the quality settings during post-production. This means you can shoot at a lower resolution to save storage and later output at a higher resolution if needed.
File sizes with REDCODE depend on the resolution, frame rate, and compression ratio. Shooting 5K at 8:1 compression produces roughly the same file size per minute as 4K ProRes 422 HQ. The advantage is that the R3D file contains more color information and dynamic range because it is raw data. For visual effects work, green screen compositing, and color grading, the extra information in R3D files is invaluable.
However, R3D files require specialized software to edit. Most professional editing platforms like Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, and Final Cut Pro can decode R3D files, but they require more processing power than compressed codecs. Many workflows use proxy files for editing and then conform to the original R3D files for the final render. RED provides free software for managing and transcoding R3D files.
