Action Cameras

Action Cameras

Action cameras are small, rugged, waterproof cameras designed to be taken places where regular cameras cannot go. Strapped to a helmet, mounted on a bike handlebar, or clamped to a surfboard, they capture footage from perspectives that would be impossible or dangerous with a traditional camera. The GoPro popularized this category, but there are now many options from DJI, Insta360, and others that push the boundaries of what such a small device can do.

The key feature of an action camera is its durability. They are built to survive drops, bumps, water, dust, and extreme temperatures. Most come with a waterproof housing or are waterproof right out of the box, often down to ten meters or more without an extra case. This makes them perfect for skiing, snorkeling, mountain biking, and any activity where you would not risk bringing a regular camera.

Action cameras sacrifice image quality for size and toughness. Their sensors are small, typically around one 2.3-inch type, which is much smaller than the sensor in a smartphone. This means they struggle in low light and produce more noise. But they make up for it with incredibly wide-angle lenses that capture immersive, stable footage. Modern electronic image stabilization in action cameras is so good that it can replace a gimbal in many situations.

One of the most useful features of action cameras is the ability to mount them almost anywhere. The standard mounting system uses a flat three-pronged mount that attaches to helmets, chest straps, handlebars, suction cups, and selfie sticks. This versatility lets you get creative angles that add energy and immersion to your videos. You can even mount them on drones for aerial footage.

Action cameras are not replacements for your main camera. They are specialized tools for specific situations. If you are hiking and want a time lapse of the whole trail, if you are diving and want to film fish, or if you are cycling and want a first-person POV, an action camera is the right choice. For portraits, landscapes, or any situation where image quality matters most, you will still want a larger camera.
